Highlights
View of the summit craters
With 4 x 4 vehicles we go up high, to 2850 metres to Pizzi Deneri.
The huge summit craters loom directly in front of us and are within reach:
- the former highest point of Etna, the Northeastern Crater, and
- the current highest point: the Southeastern Crater.
Valle del Bove
We are standing right on the precipice, on the edge of the mighty Valle del Bove on the eastern side of Mount Etna.
It was formed by the collapse of the former, even higher peak of Mount Etna.
Formerly a green valley, it is now one huge lava desert.
Volcanological Obervatorium
Mount Etna is an extremely diverse volcano. Our guides explain the different volcanic activities, the dangers of Etna and the countless monitoring methods.
On Pizzi Deneri we see the volcanological observatory of INGV Catania; the only observatory on Etna still standing. The observatory on the south side, Torre del Filosofo, was completely destroyed in 2002.
The huge craters of 2002
25 craters were created during the 2002 eruption, a line of fire split the entire slope at that time (Cerniera di Fuoco del 2002).
We hike to the largest of these craters and walk along the crater rim. From there we survey the vast scale of the craters and lava flows that have poured over the entire hillside in different directions.
Lava tunnel
At the end of the tour we get to know another fascinating formation created by Etna: when an eruption ends and the right conditions prevail, the inside of the lava flow empties and a cave is formed.
Equipped with helmets and torches, we discover one of Etna’s numerous lava tunnels.
